If you are heading to the Kentucky Derby, be sure to save some money for souvenirs. You’ll want something to remember your great experience other than a betting slip. There are great places all around Louisville to pick up Kentucky Derby souvenirs. (If you can’t make it to the Derby this year, you can still pick up your souvenirs by visiting the Official Online Store of the Kentucky Derby.)
On the day of the Kentucky Derby, the gift shop at Churchill Downs will sell all kinds of souvenirs, but prepared to wait in lines just to get into the shop over by the clubhouse section, and if you don’t shop early, expect many items to sell out before the big race. The key here is to get to Churchill Downs early and head straight to the gift shop. Alternatively, head over to the grandstand section past the paddock. Here, you’ll find a kiosk selling some souvenirs, and early in the morning, there are no lines or crowds yet.
If you happen to get into town a bit early, a great alternative is to visit the Kentucky Derby Museum’s gift shop located at Churchill Downs. But note that the Museum and its gift shop are closed on the day of the Kentucky Derby as well as the preceding Friday when the Kentucky Oaks is held at the track, so if you want to shop here, be sure to stop by on Thursday. The Museum’s gift shop sells everything you’ll find at the gift shop inside Churchill Downs on Derby day without the lines. They have a great selection of items, too. Be sure to pick up a pin of last year’s Derby winner for luck!
Other great gifts can be found around town. Just visit any major hotel’s gift shop, and you will find it stocked with everything Derby and horse related from stuffed animals to home decor and kitchenware. Also, if you have time, just 10 miles east of downtown Louisville is the Oxmoor Center Mall, Here, both Von Maur and Macy’s stock some Derby-related gifts, too, as well as a nice selection of hats, dresses, and ties that are perfect for Derby day. At Von Maur, you’ll also find a nice selection of clothing from Vineyard Vines, which is the official style of the Kentucky Derby, as well as horse-themed chocolate molds from Cellar Door Chocolates of Louisville. Also, if you are out in this area of town, head over to Dee’s Crafts which is just a mile or two away from the mall. At Dee’s you’ll find a nice selection of Derby hats that are reasonably priced as well as Derby decor that is perfect for a future Derby party at home.
